The Living Legacy of Chindawol

Chindawol is far more than a historic neighborhood in Kabul. For nearly three centuries, it has been the intellectual and spiritual center of Afghanistan’s Shia community, a place renowned for profound scholarship, strategic wisdom, and unwavering commitment to moderation even in the most turbulent times.
Generations of Chindawole scholars, merchants, and leaders earned deep respect across the nation for their knowledge, foresight, and ability to build bridges with courage and dignity. Through quiet strength and principled engagement, Chindawol became the strongest, best-informed, and most respected Shia community in Afghanistan, a true bridge for the wider Shia population and home to the country’s most distinguished voices.
This proud legacy lives on in the Ismailzada family and many other distinguished Chindawol families. Haji Zair Ismailzada, Haji Hashem Ismailzada, Haji Azim Ismailzada, Zia Ismailzada, together with their father and the generations before them, embodied the values of informed faith, community service, and quiet strength that define Chindawol.

A New Chapter in New Jersey
Today, the same Chindawol spirit thrives vibrantly in New Jersey, USA. The large Ismailzada community has proudly re-established its own small Chindawol right here in America. As proud Afghan Americans, this close-knit community continues the historic mission of its ancestors, contributing peacefully and meaningfully to American society through business, education, healthcare, culture, civic service, and community leadership.
The Chindawol Foundation
Manzur Karim, a distinguished member of the Ismailzada family, founded the Chindawol Foundation to keep this living legacy strong and connected across continents. The Foundation serves as the vital bridge between our historic roots in Kabul and our vibrant present in New Jersey and the global diaspora.
Through this platform, we gather and preserve:

  • Historic photographs and images of old Chindawol and its landmarks
  • Family portraits and powerful stories of our parents, grandparents, and ancestors
  • Achievements and memories from our growing community in New Jersey and beyond

We also invite every Chindawole to share remaining family properties or connections still in Kabul’s Chindawol, so we can document the living link between past and present.By preserving these stories and images, the Chindawol Foundation ensures that the moderate, informed, and bridge-building spirit of Chindawol continues to inspire and unite us, turning exile into empowerment and memory into a living mission of service, knowledge, and unity.

Chindawol is not only where we come from.
It is who we are, in Kabul, in New Jersey, and wherever we thrive
